Around 2000 years ago, there lived a Chinese poet and minister called Qu Yuan.

Back then, there were 7 countries on China’s map, and one of them was called the State of Chu. Qu Yuan came from the State of Chu.

He worked for the State of Chu for many years, and helped the King of Chu turn the state into one of the strongest states of that time.

Because Qu Yuan was very smart and powerful, many people were jealous of him. They told the King a lot of bad things about him, so the King became increasingly distrustful, and less and less willing to accept his ideas. Eventually, the king sent him far away from the capital wishing to never see him again. Qu Yuan was very disappointed, but he had no other choice.

The King of Chu went to the State of Qin, and wasn’t allowed to return to Chu. He regretted sending Qu Yuan away, and 3 years later, he died in the State of Qin.

Later, the State of Chu was invaded by the State of Qin. After Qu Yuan learned the news, he knew that his state was about to end very soon. He was so disappointed that he jumped into the Miluo River.

The Chu people liked Qu Yuan very much. Upon receiving the news that he jumped into the river, they were heart-broken and worried. Thus many people went to row their boats and find Qu Yuan in the river.

To prevent Qu Yuan’s body from getting eaten by fishes, people threw rice into the river. Unfortunately, in the end they still couldn’t find Qu Yuan’s body.

Since that time, every year on the 5th day of the 5th Lunar month, people eat dumplings and race on dragon boats. Eventually this day became a traditional festival in China.
