How to use 吗 (ma) to ask questions in Chinese

FUNCTION

To turn your sentence into a yes-no question, add a question particle (ma) after it:

你是中国人。

Nǐ shì Zhōngguórén.
You are Chinese.

你是中国人?

Nǐ shì Zhōngguórén ma?
Are you Chinese?
(lit. “You-are-Chinese-[ma]?”)
